You can enable a character count on your iPad 2 or iPhone 4 to keep track of how long your text messages are!

To enable this feature, go to “Settings”> “Messages”> “Character Count”. Then slide the bar to on.

Now, while you’re typing out a text message, your character count will appear.

It’s a pretty simple, but useful trick, because this way, you will know how many text messages you’ll be sending to someone during a conversation (maximum characters per text is 160).
